This afternoon, Monday, October 5, we will be migrating our OpenStack clouds (x86, ARM and POWER) to new OpenStack packages. Running instances will keep running; you may see brief interruptions when using the OpenStack API or the dashboard during the afternoon.

What's happening:
We're moving every controller and hypervisor off the RDO packages we've used until now and onto OpenStack packages we build and maintain ourselves, and moving the API services to a new application server. This gives us more flexibility to move to newer OpenStack releases and to support all of our architectures, and lets us keep OpenStack patched without depending on an upstream package set. It also lets us move to a new AlmaLinux major version on our own schedule rather than RDO's; our goal is to reach AlmaLinux 10 as soon as possible. Not affected:
- Running instances (guest VMs), their networking and their attached volumes keep running throughout
- The API endpoints, your credentials and the dashboard address stay the same
Affected:
- The OpenStack API and dashboard on all three clouds (x86, ARM and POWER)
- Launching, resizing, migrating or deleting instances, and attaching volumes, may briefly fail or be slow
What you can do:
If you have automation that calls the OpenStack API, such as CI that launches instances, expect occasional failed requests during the window and retry them. No other action is needed.
We migrate one server at a time, so each interruption should last only a few minutes; we've reserved the afternoon to work through them carefully.
We've run this migration in a multi-node test environment to make sure the process works, but production may still turn up issues we haven't seen.

UPDATE
The OpenStack package migration is complete. Every controller and hypervisor on the x86, ARM and POWER clouds is now running our own OpenStack packages, and the OpenStack API and dashboard are back to normal.
During the work, an unrelated firewall issue briefly cut network connectivity to some running instances. Instances on the x86 cloud were affected the longest; on the ARM and POWER clouds it lasted a few minutes at most. The instances themselves kept running, and connectivity is fully restored, so there is nothing you need to do. We're sorry for the disruption, which our announcement said would not happen.
